BMI vs Body fat

We have a heard about BMI, especially in Singapore. BMI stand for Body Mass Index, BMI is an estimation of body fat based on the height and weight. It does not measure body fat directly but use an equation to estimate it and determine whether a person is that is an unhealthy or healthy weight. This indicator often to help people to know whether they are in a normal weight, underweight or overweight; depending on the unit km/m², Of course, the higher the value indicated the higher the level of obese. The range of BM I for underweight normally indicate that this person has a BMI of 18.5 km/m² or below, normal weight is from 18.5 km/m² to 24.9 km/m² and overweight will be 25 km/m² to 30 km/m² and obese will be beyond 30 km/m². This is a very simple method for everyone to follow.

But BMI also have the own limitations. If your body muscle mass is high, your body weight will be high as well but if you calculate using BMI, you will find that you most probably will be overweight. Therefore, we can understand that for people who are involved in a lot of physical activity, BMI may not show the correct measurement reflecting on the body fat


What other ways can we use to determine whether our body fat level is acceptable?. There’s something called the body fat percentage. Body fat is the amount of fat that we have in our body. There are some internal organs need this fat for protection. Therefore, we will never expect a zero percent body fat percentage. They are various ways to measure body fat percentage. Body fat percentage is considered a better indicator compared to BMI. As we can determine your weight not only by body fat but also you muscle mass. As muscle mass can be heavy too.

We can have people who have a very low body fat percentage but in the IBM measurement, yet they are indicated as overweight. And you will be surprised that there are people who show a normal weight according to the BMI scale, but they are eventually overfat.

How can we measure our body fat percentage? The biggest way of measuring body fat percentage and the most accurate way is called skinfold.

Alternative you can use bioelectrical impedence analysis, a type of fat measurement device which normally comes with the weighting scale can also help to measure the body fat percentage.
